Wastewater has entered the Ludza River after a sewer pipe burst in Felicianova, in Cibla parish of Ludza Municipality, LSM reports.
The State Environmental Service (VVD), which received a complaint about the discharge, said the municipality had been informed and instructed to stop the leak immediately and prevent further untreated wastewater from entering the environment.
The municipality has shut off the damaged section of pipe and is checking the condition of a backup pipeline. If that pipe cannot be used, untreated wastewater will be collected and transported by tanker.
The VVD plans to take water and wastewater samples to assess the impact on the river’s water quality. Once the test results are available, it will evaluate the possible environmental effects and whether further measures are needed.
