Kaunas District Municipality has opened a second above-ground modular shelter, in Domeikava, for the protection of the school community during emergencies, LRT reported. The shelter has 100 square metres of indoor space.

The municipality said the shelter is designed for short-term refuge and can provide people inside with essential conditions during an emergency. It has an airtight door system, independent LED lighting, ventilation with automatic blast valves and an emergency exit.

The shelter is also equipped with bench-beds, first-aid supplies, fire extinguishers, dry toilets and water containers. A mechanical air-extraction system can be switched on to increase air circulation when needed.

“When we asked residents what mattered most as we prepared Kaunas district’s strategic development plan, safety was among the main priorities. Today, this is especially relevant across Europe. I am pleased that we are opening the district’s second modular shelter in Domeikava and can improve the safety of the children studying here and the teachers working here,” Mayor Valerijus Makūnas said, according to a statement.

The first modular shelter in the district opened in June on the grounds of Adomas Mitkus Basic School in Garliava. The municipality spent more than 411,000 euros to install both shelters.
