Latvia’s Internal Security Bureau has sent a criminal case to prosecutors, seeking the prosecution of a Prison Administration medical professional and an official over alleged offences involving psychotropic substances, LSM reported.
The bureau said it sent the case to the Riga Eastern Prosecutor’s Office in the second half of October 2026. It seeks prosecution of the medical professional for issuing prescriptions for psychotropic drugs without medical need, unlawfully acquiring and possessing medicines containing the substances, and attempting to take psychotropic substances across the Latvian border.
The bureau also seeks prosecution of an official for allegedly inducing the medical professional to issue prescriptions without medical need. Investigators found that, at the official’s request, the medical professional repeatedly issued special prescriptions in the names of different people so the official could obtain the medicines.
The medical professional was detained in May 2025 while attempting to take psychotropic substances across the border. More than 10,000 euros and about 1,000 US dollars in cash were found and seized, then placed under arrest as part of the criminal case.
Both people ended their employment with the Prison Administration during the investigation. The bureau said it uncovered the alleged offences in cooperation with the administration.
