The Estonian psychological thriller My dear mother will begin airing on ETV on Thursday, October 29, after winning five Estonian Film and Television Awards. The series has also received recognition abroad, ERR reported.
The series won the award for best television series at this year’s Estonian Film and Television Awards. Director Doris Kartau, actress Doris Tilk, actor Indrek Ojari and make-up artist Gristina Pahmann also received awards. The series will run for six weeks, with new episodes on Thursdays at 10.05 p.m.
Previously available only through Elisa, the series centres on Alina, played by Tilk, whose mother Renata, played by Elina Reinold, is found murdered on a beach. Alina becomes the investigators’ main suspect. She has been on the police’s radar since childhood as a drug addict and prostitute, but the story also presents her as a victim deprived of her childhood and forced into experiences no child should face.
The series also follows former police officer Mart, played by Ojari, whose background raises questions. The story, inspired by real life, was written for television by screenwriter Raoul Suvi. Saara Pius and Jaanus Mehikas also have key roles. The producers are Toomas Ili, Jevgeni Supin and Olena Malkova.
My dear mother was the first Estonian television series selected for the Berlinale Series Market Selects programme, held as part of the Berlin International Film Festival. It has also taken part in other festivals and received recognition there.
