The University of Tartu will move its daytime bachelor’s law programme from Tallinn to Tartu next academic year, ERR reports. The university plans to admit more than 100 students to the programme, although the exact number has not been confirmed.
Law studies will remain available in Tallinn through session-based learning and continuing legal education. Students already enrolled in the Tallinn daytime programme will be able to complete their studies there under the current curriculum.
Law faculty director Priit Pikamäe said interest has increasingly favoured daytime study in Tartu and session-based study in Tallinn. This year, the university received 282 applications for daytime study in Tartu, 206 for daytime study in Tallinn and 121 for session-based study in Tallinn.
Of 55 places offered for daytime study in Tallinn this year, 23 were filled through threshold-based admission. All 85 daytime places in Tartu were filled. The faculty hopes to increase the number of daytime places in Tartu after ending the Tallinn programme.
The restructuring is also linked to lower funding. The faculty’s state operating support for higher education is expected to fall by about 4%, while additional funding provided through the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs is set to decrease by 50%. The amounts are not final because budget discussions are still under way at both state and university level.
