Plans for a four-lane Tallinn-Narva highway between Haljala and Kukruse largely follow the existing route, ERR reported after a draft corridor selection was made public.

The 67-kilometre stretch is covered by a special spatial plan launched by the government four years ago. The proposed corridor mostly follows the current road, though it has been widened in some places to allow for more detailed planning with local residents and experts.

The largest planned changes are in Ida-Viru County, where the route would bypass the villages of Varja and Purtse. Homes lie close to the existing road in both villages, and widening it there would affect people’s homes, said Anti Palmi, head of the Transport Administration’s eastern department.

The plan would make it possible for the state to build the road and improve traffic safety in the future. The separate 45-kilometre Jõhvi-Narva stretch of the Tallinn-Narva highway has also yet to be built as a four-lane road and has been awaiting funding for years.

Feedback on the proposed Haljala-Kukruse corridor is invited until November 10. Six public discussions are planned for December.
