Kai Art Center will open the first solo exhibition in the Baltics by Danish-Korean artist and filmmaker Jane Jin Kaisen this weekend, ERR reports. Island Beyond the Sea brings together seven video works inspired by Jeju, the artist’s birthplace, an island off Korea’s southern coast marked by a layered history of violence and resistance.

The works will be shown together in Europe for the first time. Large-scale projections placed throughout the exhibition space surround viewers, taking them through ritual, myth, mourning and memory in an ebb-and-flow rhythm.

The seven films are Burial of This Order (2022), Offering (2023), Halmang (2023), Guardians (2024), Portal (2024), Core (2024) and Wreckage (2024).

Kai Art Center artistic director and exhibition curator Karin Laansoo said the works open a dialogue between the coasts of Tallinn and Jeju. She pointed to the two places’ connections to the sea and to generations of people passing on stories in new ways. Laansoo said Kaisen’s films foreground women’s knowledge and island myths, and invite viewers to consider how memory is carried forward and communities renew themselves.

Kaisen is known for visually striking, layered, performative and poetic works. Her practice brings past and present together and explores how memory, migration, borders and their interpretation shape individual lives, and how personal experience intertwines with the histories of peoples and states.

She represented Korea at the 58th Venice Biennale. Her exhibition Community of Parting at Charlottenborg Kunsthal was named the 2020 Exhibition of the Year by AICA Denmark. Her recent projects include the 2026 Medina Triennial and, in 2025, the 13th Berlin Biennale, the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, the 36th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts and the Hawai‘i Triennial. Her work has also featured in the Korea Artist Prize 2024 exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and in Dislocation Blues at Tate Modern in 2023.

Island Beyond the Sea is on view at Kai Art Center until February 21, 2027.
