Ülle Madise will take office as Estonia’s president on Monday after taking the oath before parliament, ERR reports.

Madise and her spouse are due at the presidential office in Kadriorg at 2:15 p.m., where they will be welcomed by outgoing President Alar Karis and his wife, Sirje Karis. They will then travel together to the square in front of the parliament building, where Karis will greet an honour guard. The ceremony at Toompea Castle is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Karis will give a speech, followed by Madise’s oath of office and her first speech as president. Estonia’s public broadcaster will carry the ceremony live.

Madise, 51, was born and educated in Tartu and is a legal scholar. She has worked at the Ministry of Justice, the parliament’s Constitutional Committee, the National Audit Office and as a legal adviser to the president. She has served as Chancellor of Justice since 2015 and was reappointed for a second term in late 2021.

Seventy-five members of parliament nominated Madise for president. Parliament elected her in a secret ballot with 71 votes.
