Inga Vanaga, head of the Latvian Education and Science Workers’ Trade Union, wants decision-makers in the next term of Latvia’s parliament to ensure that any reforms take account of the interests of education and science employees, LSM reported.

“My dream is for education and science to shape Latvia’s future,” Vanaga said. She said everyone should be able to find the right education path, teachers should have opportunities to grow and feel trusted and supported, and researchers should be able to pursue their ideas with academic freedom.

Vanaga said workers should not learn about changes at the last minute. They should have time to prepare and receive professional support. Teachers should also have enough time for students and for cooperation with colleagues and parents.

She said education quality should not be judged only by centralised exam and assessment results or international reports. Families and timely support also contribute to quality, as do institutions outside schools that should follow what is happening with children and their families.
