Musician and ceramicist Evelin Samuel says the two pursuits do not interfere: she works with ceramics in the morning and music in the evening, she told ERR’s programme OP.
Samuel has recently been drawn to large ceramic forms, particularly large vases, and has become fascinated by making glazes. She likened the process to alchemy and said she uses artificial intelligence to adjust glaze recipes, including changing their ingredients or making them glossier or more matte.
She has also used artificial intelligence to create her website. Samuel joked that when she first listened to music through headphones, she thought everyone hearing their favourite music while walking around would be incapable of doing anything bad in the world.
Music remains important to her alongside ceramics. Last year, she recorded an album for which she asked composer Tõnis Kõrvits to write arrangements for string quintet and piano.
Samuel has recently begun a project with her son, who studies piano in the 11th grade at MUBA. They have already performed their first concerts together, which she described as a special way to spend quality time and a joy to watch her son perform.
