Obinitsa opens produce processing centre for local farmers

A new fruit and vegetable processing centre has opened in Obinitsa, in Setomaa, where farmers can sell or store vegetables and berries, ERR reports. The processed produce is expected to supply local educational institutions first.

The centre will employ 10 people and cost four million euros. The state contributed three million euros, while the Võrumaa Development Centre and private investors provided the remaining million.

The centre has 10 storage rooms with adjustable conditions. Four are for berries and apples, while the other six can be set to different temperatures. Together, they can hold about 500 tonnes of raw produce, centre manager Margus Timmo said.

Equipment has been selected to process about 2 to 2.5 tonnes of raw produce, with the defence forces in Võru County also in mind, Timmo said.
