Vikerraadio launches Moomin language game in 11 languages

Estonian radio station Vikerraadio is inviting listeners to identify the languages used in recordings of Moomin stories, ERR reports. The game is being held for the tenth time to mark the European Day of Languages.

Children from the Tallinn European School will read excerpts from books by Tove Jansson, one of the best-known Finnish-Swedish artists and writers, in 11 languages.

The game will be available on Vikerraadio’s website from 7 a.m. on September 24 until 3 p.m. on September 25. Participants can play individually or as a class, in either Estonian or English.

After submitting their answers, players will see how many languages they identified correctly. They will later also be able to view their answers. The results will be announced on Owe Petersell’s programme at 4:15 p.m. on September 25.

Previous language games have featured songs about Pippi and blacksmith boys, as well as excerpts from The Mushroomers, Little Red Riding Hood, Alice in Wonderland, The Little Prince, Harry Potter and The Man Who Spoke Snakish. The 2024 game marked the 20th anniversary of Estonia joining the European Union and featured excerpts from children’s books published that year in EU member states.
