Riga waste collection fees to rise in three zones from October

Waste management fees will increase slightly from October 1 in three of Riga’s four waste management zones, according to LSM. The changes, approved by the Riga City Council Housing and Environment Committee, are linked to inflation, labour costs and higher fuel prices.

The final decision on the fee changes must still be made by the Riga City Council.

In the first zone, the fee will rise from 10.07 euros to 10.31 euros per cubic metre, an increase of 2.38%. In the second zone, it will increase from 10.35 euros to 10.63 euros per cubic metre, or 2.71%.

In the third zone, the fee will rise from 7.03 euros to 7.18 euros per cubic metre, an increase of 2.13%. In the fourth zone, the fee will decrease slightly from 10.02 euros to 9.94 euros per cubic metre.

The calculations take into account a reduction in the fee for managing biological waste, which has been applied since July.

The committee chair said waste management contracts allow fees to be indexed. This means service providers can initially apply a lower price because they do not have to include the risk of price increases for the entire contract period.

Riga’s waste management is divided into four zones. The first covers the city centre and the former Latgale District, the second covers the former Kurzeme District in Pārdaugava, the third covers the former Zemgale District in Pārdaugava, and the fourth covers the former Northern District and Vidzeme District.

Clean R provides waste management services in the first and second zones, Lautus vide operates in the third, and Eco Baltia vide operates in the fourth.
