RSU opens 13 million euro sports complex in Torņakalns

Riga Stradins University opened a new sports complex in Torņakalns on Wednesday, with construction costs exceeding 13 million euros, LSM reported. The facility combines education, sports and research and will also be available to local residents.
The complex includes a sports hall for basketball and volleyball, a gym, and rooms for Pilates and yoga. A significant part of the facility is dedicated to studies and research.
Physiotherapist Kārlis Dundurs will have his own fully equipped sports laboratory at the complex. He brought with him his biggest achievement to date, a European Championship gold medal won this summer by Latvia’s under-16 basketball team.
“The feelings are indescribable. Now I will tell everyone that we can. Latvia can!” Dundurs said.
The facility will provide new opportunities for students at Riga Stradins University and the Sports Academy. Students also welcomed the chance to study sports medicine and connect their future careers with sport.
“All science is connected with sport. Now that the Sports Academy has joined us, this is even more significant,” said Kristiana Jurkevica, chair of the Riga Stradins University Student Self-Government board.
RSU Infrastructure Department director Dainis Zemešs said local residents would be invited to activities at the complex, with a focus on healthy lifestyles.
