Theatre yearbook shifts focus from productions to people

Estonian Theatre Union and Estonian Theatre Agency have published “Theatre Life 2025”, a yearbook that focuses less on productions and more on people, trends and narratives, ERR reported.

The editors said the collection includes 11 articles by 16 authors and one translator. They said daily criticism already covers productions relatively effectively, while people, trends and narratives become clearer only from a broader perspective.

The editors identified “risk” as a possible common theme across the book. They ask whether creative and political risk-taking is possible in today’s theatre landscape, who is allowed to take risks and who is not, and what risk-taking gives or takes away.

The yearbook was compiled by theatre critic and researcher Karin Allik and dramaturg Oliver Issak. Tiia Sippol compiled the statistics and chronicle, Mari Tuuling edited the language, Tiiu Sandrak translated the text and Maris Lindoja designed the book. Kaspar Viilup served as editor.
