Residents say better roads, accessible healthcare and well-paid jobs are needed to encourage people to live in the countryside, LSM reported ahead of a forum in Līvāni on the right to live where one chooses.

People who spoke to Latvian Radio said poor roads and limited access to medical care were particular concerns in the Latgale region. They also pointed to the importance of public transport, shops and other everyday services.

Residents said better-paid jobs could persuade more young people to move to rural areas. One person cited an acquaintance who relocated to Augšdaugava municipality after receiving a better job offer.

Concerns were also raised about rural communities losing residents as services decline. In recent years, access to services has fallen in many places, including through a reduction in post offices and public transport options. Residents said it was important both to attract newcomers and to retain people already living there.
