Oujea pop-up gallery opens beside Tallinn city wall

A new pop-up gallery called Oujea has opened in Tallinn’s Old Town beside the city wall, ERR reported. Its opening exhibition, “This May Seem Impossible,” was created by artists Sonja Sutt and Irma Holm.

The gallery is located at Laboratooriumi 14 and is led by Hanna Samoson, a photo, video and installation artist. Samoson said she had been looking for an opportunity to establish an independent gallery.

“The need came from wanting to take the reins, to be less dependent and find a place where I could organise an exhibition myself,” Samoson said. “There are so many buildings standing unused, so why not ask? It also seems exciting to go somewhere no one has been before, experience the spirit of the place and see what can be done there.”

Holm and Sutt’s site-specific exhibition explores suffering and overcoming hardship through works arranged across five spaces.

“It is a journey that we thought through for ourselves,” Sutt said. “Our vision was about how a person overcomes something difficult, and we reached these conclusions through our own life experiences.”

Holm said the artists had spent a long time searching for a space that would support the story and allow them to work with the surroundings.

“This May Seem Impossible” will remain on display at the Oujea pop-up gallery at Laboratooriumi 14 until the end of the week.
