Firefighters made 101 storm damage callouts in 24 hours

Firefighters in Lithuania made 101 callouts to clear storm damage between Monday morning and Tuesday morning, LRT reports, citing the Fire and Rescue Department.

Crews worked from 6 a.m. on Monday to 6 a.m. on Tuesday to remove trees that had fallen on roads and elsewhere, as well as carry out other emergency work.

The largest number of callouts was recorded in Kaunas County, with 22. Firefighters responded 19 times in Utena County, 18 times in Panevėžys County, nine times in Marijampolė County, eight times in Vilnius County, six times each in Alytus and Klaipėda counties, five times each in Šiauliai and Telšiai counties, and three times in Tauragė County.

In Šakiai District, crews removed about 50 trees from the road between Lukšių town and Paluobių village.

In Gudiena village in Kaišiadorys District, part of a roof was torn off by the storm and several roofing sheets were left dangerously hanging. Firefighters provided assistance.

In Pėdžiai village in Kėdainiai District, crews removed two trees from the road after 8 a.m. They also dispersed a hornet nest. On the way, firefighters removed another tree from a footpath on J. Basanavičiaus Street.

In Kaunas, a tree that fell on the road in Gerovės Lane brought down power lines. Firefighters cleared its branches and reopened the road.

On Demokratų Street in Kaunas, another fallen tree struck the balconies of an apartment building and broke a balcony window on the second floor. The tree was cut up and removed from the footpath.

In Vilemiai village in Kaunas District, a large ash tree fell on a farm building where chickens were kept and severed power lines. Firefighters found that the building was in critical condition and that removing the tree was not possible. They warned the elderly resident not to approach the building and advised her daughter to contact the local administration.

ESO was informed that the electricity should be disconnected because restoring power could cause a fire.

The storm that struck on Saturday brought down trees in many parts of Lithuania, killing one person and injuring four. Electricity service was disrupted for more than 268,000 customers. According to the latest ESO data, about 80,000 customers remain without power.

The Lithuanian Insurers Association said the storm had caused more than 3 million euros in insured losses to residents and businesses. Insurers had received more than 3,000 damage reports, and the association expects both figures to rise.
