Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital briefly switched on diesel generators during the storm, while electricity supplies at Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital and Children’s Clinical University Hospital were not disrupted, LSM reported, citing the LETA news agency.

The Eastern Hospital said interruptions in the city’s electricity network were observed at times over the past 24 hours. Uninterruptible power systems operated and diesel generators were activated briefly, but patient care and hospital operations continued without interruption.

Fallen trees were reported across all the hospital’s inpatient facility grounds, although no buildings were damaged.

Pauls Stradiņš Hospital continued operating normally. Its electricity supply was not interrupted, reserve power systems were not needed and no significant storm damage was recorded on the hospital grounds.

Several trees fell and branches were broken on the grounds of Children’s Clinical University Hospital. Traffic and electricity supplies were not affected, and traffic disruptions on nearby streets caused by fallen trees overnight had been cleared. All hospital gates were open, and generators had not been needed.

A cyclone reached the Baltic states from the south on Saturday, bringing storms. Red-level warnings were issued in central and western Latvia, while orange- and yellow-level warnings were issued elsewhere in the country.

Latvia’s State Fire and Rescue Service reported that one person died after a building structure collapsed in Jelgava. A firefighter was injured while clearing storm damage in Bauska Municipality, and a person was struck by a tree in Aizkraukle Municipality.

Storm damage disrupted electricity supplies for more than 270,000 people.
