Cyclone moves away from Lithuania as winds weaken and temperatures rise
The cyclone that brought heavy rain and strong winds to Lithuania is moving away, with conditions expected to improve and temperatures to reach 21 degrees Celsius on Sunday, LRT reported, citing Meteo.lt forecaster Janas Vaitkevičius.
On Saturday, wind gusts reached 18 to 23 metres per second in many parts of the country and 24 to 28 metres per second in some locations. The strongest effects were recorded in western Lithuania. Šilutė received rainfall that met the criterion for catastrophic rainfall, while hurricane-force winds of 33 metres per second were recorded in Ventė.
“It can certainly be said that this was the strongest storm of the summer. However, calling it the strongest storm of the year would probably be somewhat too bold and premature,” Vaitkevičius said.
Lithuania will remain under the influence of the southern cyclone on Sunday, but weather conditions will gradually improve as it moves away. Many districts will see brief showers, with thunderstorms possible in some areas. Westerly winds will reach 9 to 14 metres per second, with gusts of 15 to 20 metres per second in places, mainly in northeastern Lithuania. Temperatures will rise to 16 to 21 degrees.
Weather conditions will continue to improve at the start of next week. Brief showers are expected in some places overnight on Monday and in many districts during the day, with thunderstorms possible locally. Temperatures will range from 8 to 13 degrees at night and from 16 to 21 degrees during the day.
On Tuesday, brief showers are expected only in some areas. Fog may form locally overnight, while winds will weaken. Temperatures will range from 7 to 12 degrees at night, reaching 13 to 16 degrees on the coast, and will rise to 17 to 22 degrees during the day.
No rain is forecast for the rest of the week. Winds will remain light, while daytime temperatures will gradually rise to 23 to 24 degrees.
