Estonian singer Iiris Vesik says her band Night Tapes is experiencing its first major festival summer, with performances in Europe and the United States, ERR reported.
This summer, Night Tapes performed for the first time at Hungary’s Sziget music festival. The band has also appeared at Outside Lands in San Francisco and Electric Forest in Michigan.
“We have had quite a lot of really great festivals lately,” Vesik said in an interview with ERR in Budapest. “Right now, we are travelling a lot and performing in both Europe and America. It is tiring, but very, very stimulating.”
Night Tapes performed 64 concerts last year. Some shows were scheduled every other day, while during one period the band performed on four consecutive days.
The band occasionally performs in Estonia. Vesik said appearances at the Kikumu festival in Lääne-Virumaa and Tartu Punch felt like a holiday because she was able to be at home.
“I am glad that we have started coming to Estonia more often,” she said. “At such times, I stay home for as long as possible and spend time with my parents and friends.”
After the current run of performances, Night Tapes plans to begin writing a new album. Vesik also hopes to give a separate concert in Estonia with a longer set.
Night Tapes is based in London and includes Vesik and two musicians from England. Although the band is generally identified as British, Vesik stresses that she is first and foremost an Estonian singer. She also takes an equal role in decisions about the group’s musical development.
Vesik describes Night Tapes’ music as dreamy alternative pop influenced by alternative music, shoegaze, R&B and other elements. The band aims to create music suited to an evening mood while continuing to introduce changes, with all members making those decisions together.
“It is really exciting to perform at one of Europe’s largest festivals,” Vesik said before heading to one of Sziget’s main stages. “We will see how many people know us and how many do not, but our goal is always simply to enjoy ourselves.”
