LRT, citing the Central Electoral Commission, reports that 12 candidates have submitted documents to run in the early Seimas election in the Nalšios North constituency.
Eleven candidates were nominated by political parties, while one is standing as a self-nominated candidate. The latter is still collecting supporting signatures and must obtain at least 1,000 signatures from voters in the constituency to continue his candidacy.
The commission said it had received the election deposits for all 12 candidates.
The candidates are Ignotas Adomavičius of Nemuno aušra, Giedrius Dainys of the Centre-Right Union, Gintautas Kindurys of the Lithuanian Peasants and Greens Union, and Vladislavas Kondratovičius of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party.
Nikolajus Lebedevičius will represent the Lithuanian Regions Party, Maksimas Paukštė the Freedom Party, and Mėta Paulauskė the Liberal Movement.
The Democratic Union For Lithuania has nominated Antanas Šakalis, the Homeland Union Lithuanian Christian Democrats Andrejus Šildiajev, and the Union of the Nation and Justice Dalia Štraupaitė.
Viktor Voronin will represent the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania Christian Families Alliance, while Eduardas Vaitkus has nominated himself.
After the submission period ends, the candidates’ documents will be checked. The number of candidates may still change if the review finds that some do not meet the requirements set out in the Constitution or the Electoral Code.
If their documents are in order, the candidates will be registered to take part in the election. Under the Constitution, a candidate for the Seimas must be a Lithuanian citizen who is not bound by an oath or pledge to a foreign state, is at least 21 years old on election day and permanently resides in Lithuania. Candidates must also have completed any court-imposed sentence and meet other requirements set by the Electoral Code.
The final list of registered candidates will be published on the commission’s website no later than October 8, at least 30 days before the election.
The early election in the Nalšios North constituency will take place on November 8. It was called after Jevgenijus Šuklinas, the constituency’s elected Seimas member, died in May.
