Latvia’s State Security Service has asked prosecutors to bring criminal charges against a Latvian non-citizen accused of promoting the separation of Daugavpils and the creation of a new republic, LSM reported.
The service said on August 10 that its investigation found the person had regularly expressed support for the idea on TikTok. The person also shared posts promoting the idea through several TikTok accounts, reaching a wider audience.
The TikTok account where the posts were initially published has since been deleted following action by the State Security Service.
The suspect is accused under the first part of Article 81 of Latvia’s Criminal Law. The provision concerns distributing material containing public calls to act against the territorial unity of the Republic of Latvia in a manner not provided for by the Constitution.
The State Security Service detained the suspect on May 12. The person is currently being held in custody as a security measure.
The service stressed that no one is considered guilty until their guilt has been established in accordance with the procedure set out in law.
