Assaulted girl in Marijampolė hospitalised as condition worsens

The family of a teenage girl assaulted in Marijampolė has sought medical help after her condition deteriorated, LRT.lt reports. The girl has been admitted to a hospital in Kaunas, according to Gintaras Černiauskas, a lawyer representing the family.

News portal Delfi first reported the worsening of the girl’s condition. The lawyer confirmed she was hospitalised due to her deteriorating state but did not provide further details.

The incident occurred two weeks ago, when a video circulated on social media showing the 2013-born girl being assaulted by another minor in Marijampolė’s Poetry Park. Bystanders filmed the attack and laughed but did not intervene. Prosecutors in Marijampolė have launched an investigation into the disturbance of public order, with initial reports suggesting the conflict stemmed from a social media comment.

According to prosecutors, the victim suffered dozens of blows with hands, feet, and a phone held in hand. The video of the assault spread online the same evening. After the incident, the girl felt unwell and was taken to a medical facility.

Lawyer Černiauskas previously told LRT.lt that the 13-year-old assailants would not face criminal liability but would still be held accountable. He suggested that bystanders could also be held responsible. He reflected on the psychological impact of such violence, stating: “Any child who experiences such a brutal attack would feel very bad. I don’t know what the future holds, but you can only imagine what it means for a child when it’s summer, you want to go outside, but you start to fear everything.”

Regarding the pre-trial investigation being initiated for disturbing public order rather than assault, Černiauskas emphasised that this is only the beginning. The investigation could later expand to include other criminal offences under the Criminal Code, such as causing pain or minor health disorders. He noted that this would only become clear after a medical examination precisely determines the injuries.

Marius Draudvila, Deputy Police Commissioner General, told LRT Television that the pre-trial investigation is ongoing and that the teenagers who filmed the assault are also being questioned. According to law enforcement, eight children were involved in the incident.
