Seimas to vote on Mindaugas Sinkevičius as prime minister

Lithuania’s parliament, the Seimas, will vote on Tuesday on the appointment of Mindaugas Sinkevičius, leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) and mayor of Jonava District, as the country’s next prime minister, LRT reports.

The vote requires a simple majority. If approved, Sinkevičius will have up to 15 days to present a new cabinet and government programme, agreed with the president, for parliamentary approval.

Sinkevičius, 42, was nominated after Inga Ruginienė stepped down as prime minister following a shift in the ruling coalition. He has outlined priorities including national and social security, demographic improvement, and economic development.

Under the proposed cabinet, the Democratic Party would lead the ministries of Agriculture (Kęstutis Mažeika), Energy (Lukas Savickas), and Health (Lina Kukuraitė), while the Social Democrats would head nine ministries. The Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union would retain control of the Justice and Economy and Innovation ministries.

Sinkevičius, who has served as Jonava mayor since 2011, would have to resign from that post if confirmed as prime minister. Last year, an appeals court barred him from public office over misuse of public funds, but the Supreme Court later overturned the ruling, allowing him to return to his mayoral position. He became LSDP’s acting leader in 2025 and was elected permanent chair this spring.

The new ruling coalition, formed after the Social Democrats ended their agreement with the “Nemuno Aušra” party, holds 75 seats in the 141-member Seimas.
