Lithuanian dissident Danutė Keršiūtė-Pečeliūnienė dies
Lithuanian dissident Danutė Keršiūtė-Pečeliūnienė, a prominent figure in the resistance against the Soviet occupation, has died at the age of 85, LRT.lt reports. A close associate confirmed her passing on Sunday in Anapilis.
Born in 1941 in Eišiškės, Keršiūtė-Pečeliūnienė was a Knight of the Order of the Cross of Vytis, Lithuania’s highest award for civic contributions. She joined the national revival movement in 1969, engaging in the distribution of banned literature, including the Chronicle of the Catholic Church in Lithuania, the newspaper Aušra, and works by philosophers such as Antanas Maceina and Juozas Girnius.
Her activities drew the attention of the KGB, leading to frequent searches, confiscations, and constant surveillance. Alongside Antanas Žilinskas and Teresė Birutė Burauskaitė, she contributed to the underground publication Perspektyvos, one of the most intellectually rigorous samizdat journals of the era, which analyzed human rights, culture, and societal issues.
In 1979, she began collaborating with her future husband, poet and dissident Povilas Pečeliūnas, co-editing the underground journal Alma Mater, which criticized censorship and addressed national identity. When Pečeliūnas was arrested later that year, Keršiūtė-Pečeliūnienė publicly supported him, demanding a fair trial. During the 1980 trial of Pečeliūnas, Gintautas Iešmantas, and Vytautas Skuodis, she distributed flowers to the defendants in the courtroom, an act that led to her brief detention.
After Lithuania regained independence, Keršiūtė-Pečeliūnienė was awarded the Order of the Cross of Vytis in 1998 for her contributions to the resistance. Her work exemplified a critical form of non-violent resistance, risking her career, freedom, and personal life to preserve uncensored Lithuanian thought and promote the idea of an independent Lithuania.
A farewell ceremony will be held on June 17 at 10:00 at M. Salabudos funeral home in Vilnius, followed by a funeral mass at 14:00 and burial.
