Scammers steal €87,300 from residents of Vilnius, Utena, Klaipėda and Kaunas
Fraudsters have swindled a total of €87,300 from elderly residents in four Lithuanian cities, police reported Tuesday, as cited by LRT.
In Vilnius, a 98-year-old woman reported that a 32-year-old man had fraudulently accessed her bank account between October 28, 2025, and June 5, 2026, stealing €22,380. Another woman, aged 90, told police that unknown callers posing as police officers had tricked her into handing over €1,000 in cash and her bank card in late May. A further €12,300 was later withdrawn from her account, bringing her total loss to €13,300.
In Utena, a 55-year-old man reported that €15,994 had been stolen from his account on May 24–25 while he attempted to log into online banking. A 70-year-old resident of Klaipėda lost €20,636 on June 3 under similar circumstances, when unauthorised access occurred during an online banking login attempt.
In Kaunas, a 74-year-old man was contacted on June 5 by scammers posing as police and bank officials, who convinced him to surrender his bank card under the pretext of an investigation. The fraudsters later withdrew €15,000 from his account.
Police have launched pre-trial investigations into all five cases.
