Lithuanian Democratic Party Approves Talks to Join Ruling Coalition
The governing board of the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” has agreed to begin negotiations with the ruling Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) on joining the coalition government, LRT reports.
Following a board meeting on Tuesday, party representatives described the decision as widely debated, aimed not only at playing a more active role in governance but also at restoring “calm and professionalism” to politics.
Virginijus Sinkevičius, a prominent member of the party, has previously called for the return of the Democratic Union’s and Farmers and Greens Union’s leaders to Lithuania, stating it would “make things easier” amid ongoing political discussions.
The move follows weeks of speculation about potential shifts in the government’s composition, with Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė recently comparing coalition decisions to “a cold water jug” due to their complexity.
