Virginijus Sinkevičius does not rule out becoming a government minister
Virginijus Sinkevičius, leader of the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” party, has not dismissed the possibility of leaving his European Parliament seat to join the government as a minister, LRT reports.
Speaking to LRT Radio on Monday, Sinkevičius called the prospect an “open question,” stating that any decision would depend on government priorities and potential reshuffles. “We’re not ruling anything out for now—I think this remains an open issue,” he said.
His comments follow a proposal by Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius, who suggested over the weekend that Virginijus Sinkevičius could take on the role of foreign minister. The LSDP has invited the Democratic Union to join the ruling coalition, though negotiations remain ongoing.
Virginijus Sinkevičius noted that his party’s governing board will meet on Tuesday to discuss the coalition offer. Preliminary consultations with regional branch leaders suggest broad but not unanimous support for joining the government. “Around 80 percent of the branches we’ve heard from so far appear to back the move, but we still need to gather input from all of them,” he said.
The politician cautioned that the success of coalition talks will hinge on the scope of agreed changes to the government’s programme and action plan. Currently, the ruling coalition holds 80 seats in parliament; if the Democratic Union joins, the alliance with the LSDP and the “Homeland Union” would secure 75 votes.
