Social Democrats to consider three coalition scenarios this weekend
The leader of Lithuania’s Social Democratic Party (LSDP), Mindaugas Sinkevičius, will present three possible coalition scenarios to the party’s council on Saturday but has not yet disclosed his preferred direction, LRT reports.
Sinkevičius told journalists on Tuesday that he would outline his proposed path during the closed-door meeting, though he stressed that not all three options would be equally viable. “I will clearly state my assessment and what I consider the most suitable choice,” he said, adding that he hoped the party would endorse his recommendation.
The LSDP leader confirmed the meeting would again be held behind closed doors, citing past incidents where remarks were taken out of context. “A lively, unrestrained discussion—even if it includes sharp words or criticism—is more productive,” he argued.
Tensions within the ruling coalition have grown since some government partners failed to support the establishment of a military training ground in Kapčiamestis. While Sinkevičius had previously signalled he would address the coalition’s future at the party’s May congress, he has since delayed his position, promising to evaluate all circumstances before making a decision.
Criticism of the current coalition—comprising the LSDP, the “Nemuno Aušra” (Dawn of Nemunas) party, and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union—has come from both within the Social Democrats and from President Gitanas Nausėda. Recent raids by the Financial Crime Investigation Service (FNTT) on the offices and homes of “Nemuno Aušra” leaders have further strained relations.
Sinkevičius dismissed speculation about potentially becoming prime minister, stating his focus remains on stabilising the coalition. “For now, I’m concentrating on the coalition’s formation or reformation,” he said.
