Lithuanian president nominates Gintaras Goda for Supreme Court justice
The Lithuanian parliament has been formally presented with Gintaras Goda’s candidacy for justice of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, as reported by national broadcaster LRT.
Introducing the nomination, Andrius Kabišaitis, senior advisor to President Gitanas Nausėda, described Goda as “one of the most renowned and experienced legal professionals and legal scholars in Lithuania, whose work as a judge has earned trust and respect.”
Kabišaitis stated that the president, considering Goda’s “undoubtedly exceptional professional experience across all levels of Lithuania’s court system, his deep legal expertise, practical application skills, and significant influence on the development of Lithuania’s legal system,” has requested parliament to appoint him as a Supreme Court justice.
Addressing lawmakers, Goda highlighted his extensive experience and qualifications. “When I left the Supreme Court for the Constitutional Court, I told my colleagues that I hoped and planned to return to the Supreme Court at the end of my legal career,” he said. “Over the past nine years, I have not lost my expertise in criminal law—I have continued teaching at Vilnius University’s Faculty of Law. Working at the Constitutional Court, I frequently dealt with criminal law matters, as cases often involve assessing the constitutionality of criminal statutes. I believe my accumulated experience and knowledge would allow me to successfully return to the Supreme Court and handle criminal cases.”
The parliamentary resolution will follow standard procedure, including meetings between the candidate and political factions. The Committee on Legal Affairs will lead the review of the nomination.
