Forensic experts conclude suspect in double murder was aware of his actions
A forensic psychiatric evaluation has determined that Benas Mikutavičius, accused of the brutal murders of two women in December, was capable of understanding his actions at the time of the crimes, Kauno Regional Prosecutor’s Office announced on Sunday.
The findings clear the way for a standard criminal trial, with prosecutors confirming there is no basis to pursue forced medical treatment. If convicted, Mikutavičius could face a prison sentence of eight to 20 years or life imprisonment under Article 129 of Lithuania’s Criminal Code.
According to pretrial investigators, the 1996-born suspect fatally stabbed two women—born in 2001 and 2003—on December 4 using a sharp-edged weapon. Both victims died at the scene. Mikutavičius remains in pretrial detention, the strictest preventive measure under Lithuanian law.
The investigation is led by Kauno Regional Prosecutor’s Office, with support from the Kauno County Chief Police Commissariat’s Serious Crimes Unit. A court-ordered psychiatric assessment was completed on May 4, following a December 29 directive from Kauno District Court.
