Lithuania’s prime minister and parliamentary speaker have extended greetings to firefighters and rescuers ahead of their professional holiday, honouring their dedication and bravery in life-threatening situations, ELTA reports.

Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė emphasised the demanding nature of the profession, stating that firefighters “choose a path requiring immense responsibility, endurance, and courage—a job filled with unpredictability and immense challenges.” She noted that their daily work involves risking their lives to save others and protect property from fire, leaving no room for hesitation. “This service demands only those fully committed, who understand the meaning of sacrifice and resolve,” Ruginienė said in her address.

Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas described firefighters as “heroes who face mortal danger every day to save lives and property,” though they do not seek recognition. “You never know what challenge each call will bring,” he said, comparing their role to a “final line of defence” in emergencies. Olekas expressed gratitude for their service to Lithuania and its people, wishing them meaningful work, strong support from loved ones, and unwavering health and determination.

The annual International Day of All Firefighters, observed on May 4, honours the patron saint of firefighters, St. Florian.
