Mindaugas Sinkevičius accepts nomination to remain as leader of Lithuania’s Social Democrats
Lithuania’s ruling Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has nominated incumbent chairman Mindaugas Sinkevičius to serve another term as leader, following his acceptance of the proposal at the party’s congress in Jonava on Friday, LRT.lt reports.
Sinkevičius, currently mayor of Jonava District, was the sole remaining candidate after Alytus Mayor Nerijus Cesiulis withdrew from the race. Cesiulis stated his local party branch had not endorsed his bid, adding that leadership contests are “won long before election day.” He extended his support to Sinkevičius, wishing him success in the role.
Addressing delegates, Sinkevičius acknowledged the challenges of political leadership, stating: “Often in politics, one must choose between bad, worse, and worst-case scenarios. Humanly speaking, this is not simple. If it were a trivial process, I think it would be a very easy job and profession. I accept your invitation to become the party’s chairman.”
The congress also saw approval of statutory amendments tying the party leader’s term to parliamentary elections. Longtime MEP Vilija Blinkevičiūtė was named honorary chairwoman in recognition of her contributions.
Discussions at the event included the future of the governing coalition with the “Nemunas Dawn” party, led by Remigijus Žemaitaitis. Sinkevičius announced plans for a final decision by late May, following a party council meeting. Tensions have risen within the coalition, particularly after some LSDP members opposed the establishment of a military training ground in Kapčiamestis. Cesiulis criticised Žemaitaitis, accusing him of undermining both the party and public trust while prioritising political survival.
