Vilnius city municipality has begun large-scale renovations of parks, squares and public areas, with plans to upgrade or create 30 new spaces by 2028, LRT reports.

Mayor Valdas Benkunskas stated that well-maintained public spaces are essential for urban quality of life. “Life in the city is best experienced outside—when courtyards, squares and parks are green, vibrant and convenient, they naturally encourage people to stay longer, move more and breathe deeply,” he said. “These spaces are not just infrastructure; they form the foundation of daily well-being.”

Key projects already underway include the 1.2-hectare Tūkstantmečio Square near Tūkstantmečio and Dariaus ir Girėno streets in Naujininkai, two new public areas in Žirmūnai, and a classical-style square in Pilaitė featuring decorative plantings, lit pedestrian paths, fountains and a preserved birch alley near St. Joseph’s Church.

A 30-hectare educational space, “Mamutų slėnis” (Mammoth Valley), is planned near the future National Stadium in Šeškinė. Residential districts will see new children’s playgrounds, sports zones, improved lighting, greenery and better connectivity.

By the end of 2026, Tarandė will gain a new public space with sports, leisure zones and a unique playground, while Žvėrynas will feature an accessible green area with rainwater collection systems. Lazdynai will see two key spaces renovated, and Vilkpėdė Square will be updated while preserving its natural paths and mature trees, adding new event and activity areas.

The municipality reports that 64 public spaces are slated for renovation or creation between 2024 and 2027.
