Lithuania’s ruling coalition could face restructuring in the coming months, as the leader of the Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has set a May–June deadline for a decision on potential adjustments.

LSDP chairman Mindaugas Sinkevičius told Lietuvos rytas TV’s Nauja diena programme on Friday that the party cannot prolong uncertainty, stating: “We can’t keep tugging at this rope without a result. We need to clearly decide—by May, or June at the latest—whether we’re making any reconstructions or ending all talk of red lines, unfinished business, and so on.”

His comments follow a closed-door LSDP council meeting on Thursday, where members reportedly criticised the government for being distracted by “coalition infighting” while pressing issues—such as rising prices, healthcare access, education, security, and economic challenges—go unaddressed. Sinkevičius warned that further economic strain is expected in autumn, including potential fuel-driven food price hikes and heating season pressures.

“Partners who help solve these problems will remain our partners,” he said. “Those who opt for populism, escalation, or confrontation will not.”

The LSDP currently governs in coalition with the Nemuno aušra and the Farmers and Greens Union, holding 81 seats in the 141-member Seimas. Recent tensions surfaced after Nemuno aušra lawmakers opposed the proposed Kapčiamestis military training ground in a preliminary vote. Sinkevičius confirmed minimal contact with the former coalition partner, the Democrats For Lithuania, but did not rule out future discussions.

The LSDP will hold its congress on 1 May, where Sinkevičius will stand for re-election as party leader.
