Opposition groups in Jonava have established an anonymous online platform for residents and public sector employees to report cases of political pressure by the local government, LRT reports.

The initiative, led by representatives of the Freedom Party, the Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), and the “Our Jonava” political committee, follows the signing of a resolution calling on the ruling Social Democrats to abandon “opaque and divisive governance practices.” The resolution urges transparency in public procurement, stronger anti-corruption measures, and open dialogue with the community, media, and businesses.

Justinas Rizgelis, deputy chair of TS-LKD’s Jonava branch, claimed public sector workers in the municipality face pressure over their political views. “The situation won’t change unless people feel safe to speak out,” he said. “This platform lets them share experiences anonymously—knowing there’s somewhere to turn is the first step toward change.”

Vytautas Mitalas, chair of the Freedom Party, called any form of intimidation by authorities “unacceptable” but acknowledged it as a current reality in Jonava. He framed the platform as a “safe space” for reporting injustices and a potential model for other municipalities facing similar issues.

Lina Mickevičienė, head of the Freedom Party’s Jonava branch, accused the local government of suppressing dissent, restricting information access, and replacing dialogue with “pressure and threats.” The resolution highlights systemic problems, including alleged nepotism in public sector hiring tied to political loyalty, weak media independence, and limited competition in local governance.

Jonava’s mayor, Mindaugas Sinkevičius of the Social Democratic Party, has led the municipality since 2011, with his party securing 17 of 25 seats in the 2023 local elections.
