Family makes self-built bus its year-round home

A family has made a self-built camper van their permanent home after deciding to create their first shared home on wheels, ERR’s Terevisioon programme reported.

Camper-van enthusiast Kelly Vainlo said living in the vehicle had been a practical choice for the family. She said caring for a small baby in the bus was manageable and recommended the arrangement to others.

Kristofer Kallas, who designed the bus’s custom solutions, said the project developed organically and construction began last spring. The family has already taken short trips around Italy.

The bus has eight square metres of living space and can accommodate a maximum of four people. A large storage compartment was built at the rear.

Vainlo said the construction had been difficult because every solution had to be carefully planned in the limited space. As the bus was designed for use in all four seasons, it also needed insulation. At times, the family considered selling it instead.

She compared the interior to a studio apartment, saying that everything needed could be done there. The family plans to travel to northern Spain in the autumn to look for surf waves.
