Europe must significantly increase defence funding and bolster its military capabilities, Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas stated on Saturday, marking the 22nd anniversary of Lithuania’s NATO membership.

In a ministry statement reported by LRT and BNS, Kaunas emphasised that NATO’s strength and readiness to deter threats depend on two key factors: growing military power among European allies and sustained US security commitments to the continent.

“European countries must clearly demonstrate that they are fulfilling their obligations—boosting defence budgets and reinforcing their armed forces,” the minister said.

He noted that while the US encourages Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security, Washington continues to play a vital role in NATO, including through strategic capabilities assigned to alliance defence plans, nuclear deterrence, and the deployment of forces in Europe—particularly in Lithuania and other eastern flank states.

Kaunas described the permanent and substantial presence of allied troops in Lithuania and the wider eastern flank as a “critical and tangible deterrent.”

The minister outlined Lithuania’s priorities within NATO: deepening transatlantic ties, expanding Europe’s role in the alliance, ensuring real growth in defence spending across all member states, and strengthening NATO’s air defences and technological capabilities to counter emerging threats, including drones. He also stressed the need for long-term support to Ukraine.
