The Lithuanian government has approved a draft law to establish a large military training ground in Kapčiamiestis, forcing 13 homesteads to relocate, but some residents vow to stay despite compensation offers, LRT reports.

The proposed training area, nearly the size of Kaunas, will require some residents to leave within five years, with compensation of up to €50,000 and property reimbursement at replacement value. However, locals like Antanas Margelis insist they will not abandon ancestral homes. “I don’t need compensation—give me millions, I won’t take them. These are my grandparents’ houses,” he told LRT.

Lazdijai district mayor Ausma Miškinienė acknowledged the emotional toll, noting many families have lived in the area for generations. “A fifth generation walks here now. It’s painful to leave,” said Menciškė resident Ramutė Puodžiūnienė. Others fear disruption from live-fire exercises, especially with schoolchildren in the area.

Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas claims extensive community consultations were held but admits concerns persist. “One day people agree, the next they change their minds,” he said. The opposition “Nemuno Aušra” faction questions the need for the base entirely, with leader Remigijus Žemaitaitis warning Lithuania has not learned from conflicts like Iran and Ukraine.

The government argues the facility—capable of hosting 4,000 troops—is critical for national defence, with major exercises planned five to six times yearly. The draft law now heads to parliament, where opposition parties signal support despite coalition divisions.
