Gintautas Kindurys and Mėta Paulauskė will compete in a runoff in the Nalšios North single-member constituency after neither candidate secured the required majority in the first round, preliminary results show. LRT reported the results, citing the Central Electoral Commission.
Kindurys, nominated by the Lithuanian Peasants and Greens Union, and Liberal Movement candidate Paulauskė received the most votes. The runoff will take place in two weeks. The candidate who wins more votes in that round will be elected to parliament.
Turnout on Sunday was 22.74%, with 9.49% of voters casting ballots early, bringing overall participation to 32.23%, according to the commission. A total of 28,435 residents were eligible to vote.
Under the Election Code, a candidate can win in the first round only if they receive the most votes and at least 20% of the votes of all voters registered in the constituency. In this election, that threshold was 5,687 votes. Commission chair Lina Petronienė said no candidate reached it.
Petronienė said the commission had dealt with several reports of minor irregularities, including possible incomplete labelling of political advertising under updated rules. She said the issues had been addressed and the commission had received no reports of serious violations.
Eleven candidates contested the seat: Ignotas Adomavičius, nominated by Nemuno Aušra; Giedrius Dainys of the Union of the Centre-Right; Kindurys; Social Democrat Vladislavas Kondratovičius; Nikolajus Lebedevičius of the Lithuanian Regions Party; Maksimas Paukštė of the Freedom Party; Paulauskė; Antanas Šakalys, nominated by the Union of Democrats “For Lithuania”; Andrejus Šildiajevas of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats; Viktoras Voroninas of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania-Christian Families Alliance; and Dalia Štraupaitė of the Union of the People and Justice.
The by-election was called after liberal lawmaker Jevgenijus Šuklinas, who had represented the constituency, died in late May. The commission revoked his parliamentary mandate in early June. Šuklinas, a canoeist, had been elected to parliament in 2024 with the Liberal Movement.
