Latvian court sentences father to 20 years for sexually abusing daughter

A court in Latvia’s Zemgale region has sentenced a father to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing his underage daughter, LSM reported. The Zemgale District Court also imposed six years of probation supervision on the man in its ruling on November 4.

From February 2020 to November 2022, the man repeatedly engaged in sexual acts with his daughter, who was under 16. While sharing a bed with her, he touched her body under her clothes and touched her genitals. On some occasions, he removed her clothes and continued despite her attempts to stop him.

The court found that he took advantage of the girl’s helplessness and abused his parental authority and influence. It said he knew that, because of her age and health, she could not fully understand the nature and significance of his actions or protect herself.

The court also ordered him to repay the state 22,050 euros in compensation paid to the victim.
