Kristiina Laurits opens Holy Darkroom exhibition in Tallinn
Jewellery artist Kristiina Laurits opened her exhibition “Holy Darkroom” at Hop Gallery in Tallinn on Thursday, ERR reports. It features jewellery and art objects she has created over the past year.
Laurits continues to work with unusual and unexpected materials that raise questions. In the darkroom she has created at the gallery, she says she leaves culture behind and digs, quite literally, beneath a tree root. The exhibition was designed by film artist Katrin Sipelgas.
Laurits studied jewellery and blacksmithing at the Estonian Academy of Arts, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1997 and a master’s degree in 2003. Since 1995, she has taken part in jewellery exhibitions in Europe, China and the United States. Her work is held by the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, and private collections around the world.
Since 1999, Laurits has been part of the jewellery art group Õhuloss. The group’s exhibition “Farewell, Gravity” at the University of Tartu Museum received the Estonian Cultural Endowment’s annual award for visual and applied arts in 2024. Laurits is currently a freelance artist in Tallinn.
