Latvia’s public media charity marathon Dod pieci is inviting people to register fundraising initiatives and send messages of encouragement to those who need support, LSM reports. Both can be submitted through the marathon’s website, dodpieci.lv.
A new central page will collect initiatives organised by workplaces, educational institutions, groups of friends and others. Organisers can register an event with details including who is running it, what it involves and when it is planned. The initiatives will appear on a public map where people can find activities to attend or support.
“We have always encouraged workplaces, educational institutions and groups of friends to organise charity events, take on sporting challenges or hold charity markets to raise more money for the cause,” said Toms Grēviņš, a Latvian Radio 5 presenter and the founder of the Dod pieci movement in Latvia.
This year’s marathon will focus on mental health and suicide prevention. It aims to reduce stigma and silence around mental health difficulties, help people identify risks and seek assistance earlier, and highlight systemic shortcomings. Donations will support evidence-based services for people who have attempted suicide and those at high risk of self-harm or suicide.
The 13th annual marathon will run from December 11 to 17, broadcasting from a special glass studio in Dome Square. Donations have already begun through Ziedot.lv.
