Soil tests found highly alkaline conditions in parts of the site where seven motocross riders suffered chemical burns during an event in Liepaja in October, the State Environmental Service said, LSM reported.
The Amber Piston Hard Enduro race took place on October 24 at the former Liepaja Metalurgs factory grounds, with 63 competitors from the Baltic states. After the event, seven riders sought treatment at Liepaja Regional Hospital. Four had more serious burns and sought care at the State Burn Center.
Test results showed substantial amounts of calcium compounds and high alkalinity at some points on the course. One sample had a calcium content of 309 milligrams per litre and a pH of 12.2. The service said the pH of surface water in natural conditions is typically between 6.5 and 8.5.
The former factory grounds are listed in the register of polluted and potentially polluted sites. A lime-waste storage area was previously located there, and the enduro track crossed it.
The service said regulations do not require it to approve public events, including sports competitions. It added that assessing safety should be an integral part of event planning.
