Latvia’s National Alliance could see a leadership change this autumn, with several party members potentially challenging incumbent chair Ilze Indriksone, LSM reports.
Indriksone’s term is ending after two years in the role. She has not yet decided whether to seek another term, saying a decision would be made after a party council meeting.
Some party members and political observers say the National Alliance has not made a significant breakthrough or firmly strengthened its position during her tenure, nor convincingly expanded its voter base. The party’s leadership style and future goals could be among the issues shaping the contest.
Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava is among the potential challengers. Supporters say his public profile and active work helped attract some voters to the party in recent elections. Dombrava has not said whether he will run, saying he would announce his decision if his candidacy is put forward.
Riga Deputy Mayor Edvards Ratnieks has confirmed that he will run for chair. He said he could bring “new energy” to the party, drawing on his political platform and experience in Riga City Council.
Party branches can nominate candidates until the end of November, so others could still enter the race. The contest will determine whether the party keeps its current leadership course or chooses a new leader.
