An airspace threat has been declared in the Krāslava and Ludza municipalities, and residents have received an orange cell broadcast alert with instructions on what to do, the National Armed Forces (NBS) told LSM.
The NBS and NATO allies continuously monitor Latvia’s airspace. The armed forces have strengthened air defence along the eastern border by sending additional units.
The NBS has previously warned that, while Russia’s aggression in Ukraine continues, foreign drones may again enter or approach Latvian airspace.
Cell broadcast alerts have two levels. A yellow warning informs residents of a possible threat to Latvian airspace but does not require immediate action. An orange warning reports a detected threat and requires residents to act immediately according to the instructions provided.
People in the affected area who are indoors should shelter where at least two walls separate them from the outside of the building. Drivers should assess the situation and continue to a safe place or get out of the vehicle, move away from the road and seek the nearest shelter.
If they hear an explosion, people should stay indoors and away from windows and doors. After an explosion, they should leave only after receiving instructions from the relevant authorities or at least 10 minutes after the last explosion. When moving again, they should proceed slowly and assess whether their route is safe.
Residents are advised not to post photos or videos on social media, to avoid spreading disinformation or revealing defence positions. They should go to the nearest shelter, such as a basement or designated shelter, only if the early warning system instructs them to do so.
