A Lithuanian Customs Criminal Service officer has become the first representative of a Baltic customs administration to graduate from the FBI National Academy in its history, LRT reported.

The officer completed the academy’s 299th session, a 10-week law enforcement leadership programme that ended on September 17 in Quantico, Virginia. Candidates from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia took part in the selection process, the Customs Criminal Service said.

A total of 265 law enforcement officers completed the session, including 29 international participants from 28 countries and US representatives from 44 states and the District of Columbia. Members of military organisations and federal civilian agencies also took part. For the first time in the academy’s history, two FBI special agents graduated alongside other law enforcement leaders.

The programme focused on leadership, strategic thinking, decision-making and crisis management, as well as organised crime challenges and officers’ psychological resilience. The Lithuanian officer’s participation also gave other attendees an opportunity to learn about customs criminal intelligence. The service said foreign colleagues and US officers were particularly interested in Lithuania’s experience tackling smuggling and implementing international sanctions.

“What impressed me most was the professionalism of the instructors. They are experts in their fields, encouraging not only the absorption of information but also critical thinking and the search for unconventional solutions,” the officer said. “Every country faces its own challenges, but crime today crosses borders, so international cooperation is essential.”

Participants also had to meet demanding physical fitness standards. The programme concluded with the academy’s traditional “Yellow Brick Road” challenge, a roughly 10-kilometre route through wooded, hilly terrain in Quantico, with obstacles including walls, rocky ground, steep sections tackled with ropes and muddy stretches.
