A record 130 people registered for an open day at the new Liepāja Prison, where pay and social benefits are among the main draws, LSM reports.

The event, organised by the Prison Administration, aimed to introduce visitors to work at what it described as Latvia’s most modern prison and help dispel public stereotypes about the prison system.

One visitor, Ieva, who works in beauty services, said she was considering changing jobs for the additional income. Salaries at the prison range from 1,500 to 2,700 euros before tax. She said she planned to apply for positions in the supervision department and as a contact person.

Another visitor, Andis, said he wanted to see how the prison system and its working methods had changed. He described the workplace and staff as new and friendly, and said the work might interest him despite not having planned to apply.

The prison began operating earlier this year and employs nearly 300 people. It plans to create up to 450 jobs. Vacancies include supervision specialists, resocialisation contact persons and social workers.

Prison Governor Māris Dumpis said the open day gave potential employees a chance to see their future workplace and learn about job duties. He said applicants are mainly motivated by pay and social benefits.

To become an officer, candidates must pass health, legal-compliance and physical-fitness checks. Dumpis said some applicants do not pass all three. He added that open days typically attract people interested in joining the service or signing employment contracts, and that further events may be held.
