An exhibition exploring bodies through the female gaze opened Friday at Kogo Gallery in Tartu. Curated by Kaisa Maasik, “Gets under the skin” asks whether bodies can be viewed without judgment, ERR reports.
The group exhibition brings together works by sculptor Tiiu Kirsipuu and painters Liisa Nurklik, Heeyoung Noh and Marleen Suvi.
Suvi said the body and the human figure have long interested her. In her works in the exhibition, the body is linked to childhood photographs, memory and dreams. “The body often remembers certain things better than you might expect,” she said, referring to muscle memory and similar forms of remembering.
Maasik said the exhibition introduces a sense of dislocation, with something always slightly out of place. She described its central thread as a subtle uncanny quality that sets it apart from other body-themed exhibitions currently on the Estonian art scene.
“Gets under the skin” is open at Kogo Gallery until January 16.
